US Embassy, ADB join hands to rebuild 15 earthquake-damaged schools

KATHMANDU: The US Embassy in Nepal and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed an agreement to rebuild 15 earthquake-damaged schools, in Kathmandu on Thursday.

Thousands of students of 11 most earthquake-affected districts in the country would benefit from the project, informed a statement issued by the Kathmandu-based US Embassy.

The ADB would use the US contribution of USD 10 million to rebuild the schools through its Earthquake Emergency Assistance Project.

The Project uses approved architectural and engineering designs for permanent, earthquake-resilient buildings, according to the statement.

“This contribution reaffirms the US Government’s commitment to stand with the people of Nepal to rebuild a safer, more prosperous country for the next generation,” said USAID Nepal’s Acting Mission Director Amy Tohill-Stull in the statement.

The schools to receive support would also be equipped with classroom furniture, separate girls’ and boys’ water and sanitation facilities, access accommodation for children with disabilities, and recreational facilities, the statement informed.

The US Government has already provided over USD 170 million as a relief and reconstruction support to Nepal since the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake.
