Water hyacinth being removed from Jakhor Lake

Dhangadi, November 24

District Administration Office, Kailali, the Nepali Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have started removing water hyacinth from Jakhor Lake in the Dhangadi Sub-metropolitan City.

Mayor Nripa Bahadur said the lake clean-up campaign had been started in a bid to maintain the beauty of the tourist destination. “Boats will be operated after the lake is cleaned,” he added.

Chief District Officer Baburam Shrestha said the Nepali Army, Nepal Police and APF personnel had been deployed to clean the lake. “We have been holding discussions with stakeholders to begin weekly clean-up of the lake every Saturday as it is not possible to clean the lake in a single day,” he added.

Similarly, Deputy Mayor Sushila Mishra Bhatta said the clean-up campaign had also been started in public places of the municipal area. “Infrastructure will be developed as per the master plan for preservation of the lake,” she said.

Social Development Officer at the sub-metropolitan office Tanka Bista said water hyacinth in the lake would be removed in coordination with district-based social organisations.

Jakhor Lake is one of the major tourist attraction in Dhangadi. Ward No 7 Chairman of the sub-metropolis Sita Ram Rana said that then Dhangadi Municipality had handed over the lake to the plant resources office in 1997.
