Nawalpur, September 25

Thirty-year-old Basanti Pariyar was critically injured when a youth stabbed her after throwing acid on her at Danda of Kawasoti Municipality, Nawalpur, last evening. Fourteen-year-old Anjana Pariyar, who was with Basanti, was also hurt.

Anjana alleged that her neighbour Bimal Sirpali, 37, threw acid on Basanti while they were returning home after buying vegetable. “Sirpali threw acid on her head and stabbed her in the chest. When I tried to stop him, I was hurt in my hand and legs,” Anjana told police.

Anjana received 10 stitches in her right palm. District Police office Nawalpur said Sirpali attacked Basanti after she refused to marry him. Police said Basanti had received deep cuts on the chest, head and stomach. She is being treated at Bharatpur Hospital, Chitwan.

Surgeons Dr Suresh Pradhan, Dr Pritam Gurung and Dr Gyanendra Neupane conducted three-hour surgery on Basanti. She has burn injuries on the neck, arms and chest and one of her eyes has been completely damaged, said Dr Pradhan.

Police arrested Sirpali last night and he has admitted attacking Basanti.
