LETTERS: It’s airline’s discretion

This refers to the news story “Turkish Airlines bank accounts frozen” (THT, May 12, Page 14).

The reason given to file a case against Turkish Airlines seems to be quite inappropriate in view of the following reasons.

No company will invest such a huge amount on infrastructural setup hoping that it will become airline’s General Sales Agent. In fact such setup activities start only after any company is appointed as GSA.

None of the airlines will ask its GSA to bear the advertisement expenses unless it is inked in some special cases.

No airline will demand bank guarantee without appointing its GSA because as per Nepal Rastra Bank (Central Bank) rule a copy of agreement needs to be furnished to get the bank guarantee issued.

So there is no question of holding bank guarantee without appointing GSA. As everyone in this field knows that Zenith Travel was appointed Turkish Airlines’ GSA in the beginning which was cancelled after a year time Qatar Airline had done in the same manner with Zenith Travel.

As such anyone including the court should know the root cause behind the action taken by the airline before taking any action because no airline will take such action unless there is any breach of the rule by the GSA.

The decision to cancel any GSA, however, entirely lies under the airline’s discretion no matter whatsoever the reason may be.

Our plight

One must visit and see what is happening in our area after the most desired premonsoon showers.

The road going to ICIMOD headquarters was being laid with drain-pipe after a two-year-long gap of incomplete work.

But it may be due to politics that the work has stopped midway. People having access to the incomplete drainpipe have already started pouring their waste water on it.

Since the work is left midway the waste water along with rain water has collected in the barren low land at a place which has no outlet leading to the seepage of it into houses.

Immediate action is required from the authorities concerned to set the matter right? Who is responsible for all this mess?

Improper

Development is admired all the time. But developmental activities carried out in an

improper manner can cause more harm than provide the benefit it is supposed to offer.

In a developing country like Nepal, systematic process of development has become a challenge. We have roads with potholes, houses with no safety, trees cut down indifferently and so on.

All these activities not only risk the life of people but also jeopardise the existing natural condition of things. Deforestation, pollution, scarcity of resources are what we have been facing all the time.
