DHANGADHI: The traditional Bishu festival observed by Hindus in the far-west of the country is being celebrated with gaiety and fervor on Friday.

This festival commemorates the day the Earth completes its revolution around the sun. It is marked by worshipping the ancestral gods and family deities, going on pilgrimages and fasting.

It is also customary in this festival for the younger brothers-in-law and their elder sisters-in-law hitting each other with the nettle plant and sprinkling water in merriment. Rice grain kneaded with curd is consumed as the auspicious item of this festival.

Even people who are away from home in connection with work or study also return home for the festival.
