Ailing boxing coach gets help

KATHMANDU: Former South Asian Federation (SAF) Games medal-winning boxer Krishna Man Shrestha received a financial help of Rs 80,000 for his treatment here today.

Nepal Boxing Association (NBA) arranged the amount, contributing Rs 50,000 itself. Boxer Deepak Maharjan and Nepal Sports Federation donated Rs 10,000 each, while other boxing players gave Rs 5,000 to the coach who is suffering from neurological problems for the last seven months. At present, both of his legs are almost paralysed.

According to the coach’s family, around Rs 350,000 have already been spent on his treatment and he needs further treatment in India. “His treatment in India will cost us around Rs 800,000,” informed Gajendra Man Shrestha, brother of the coach. “As we cannot afford his treatment on our own, we are trying to raise money for his treatment,” he said.

Shrestha won silver in the fifth SAF Games in Colombo in 1991. He also bagged bronze in the seventh SAF Games in Madras in 1995. He also clinched gold medals during the 12th, 14th, 15th and 17th National Boxing Championships. The boxer has also won silver in the fourth International Invitational Boxing Championship in 1988 apart from winning gold in Khukuri National Boxing Championships.

Meanwhile, Nepal Olympic Committee Member Laxman Shrestha donated Rs 50,000, while boxing coaches across the country have decided to contribute their one-day salary to Shrestha. President of Nepal National and International Players Association (NNIPA) Deepak Bista also assured of donating a ‘good sum’ in a couple of days.
