Birgunj faces blood shortage

BIRGUNJ: Hospitals in Birgunj sub-metropolitan municipality are facing serious blood shortage due to the increasing number of health facilities in the area, says a study conducted by the Nepal Red Cross Society.

“The demand for blood surpasses the capacity of our centre,” said Prabin Manandhar, Incharge at the Blood Centre. According to him, the centre has distributed 5,300 packs of blood from the 5,702 collected in the fiscal year 2011/12.

The number of patients in the hospitals increases during summer, the same season when the blood donors cut back, the centre’s coordinator Madan Gupta said, adding that, they have been struggling to meet the blood demand in the hospitals.

Nepal Blood Donors Association, Parsa chairperson Satrudhan Nepal, however, said about the various ongoing campaigns to encourage people to donate blood.

Among the blood collected by the centre, three blood donors were found to be HIV positive, 22 had Hepatitis and 45 showed Syphilis symptoms, according to the centre.

Meanwhile, Red Cross staffs suggested conducting more awareness programmes to encourage people to donate blood.

“As people especially in rural areas are less positive about blood donations, awareness programmes aimed in rural areas should be conducted,” Red Cross, central member Shyam Pokharel said.
