Dr KC's health deteriorating

KATHMANDU: The health of the TU Teaching Hospital professor, who went on hunger strike two days ago, has shown signs of deterioration, doctors said.

Doctors attending to Professor Dr Govinda KC, who has been demanding that top level appointments at the institution be made solely on the basis of seniority and merit, said they are worried about the serious repercussions the fasting is having on the senior doctor’s kidneys.

Dr Prem Khadka who is attending to Dr KC said ketone levels have shot up in his urine indicating that his body, deprived of carbohydrates, is using body fat to generate energy. “If the situation continues, Dr KC may face kidney problems,” warned Dr Khadka.

“I will not call off my protest until the Tribhuvan University (TU) appoints a new dean on the basis of seniority and merit,” said Dr KC, who has opposed the appointment of Dr Dharmakant Baskota, a ‘junior’, as the institutions dean.

He said appointments at the TUTH based on political allegiance will ruin the institution. Major posts at institute — dean, two assistant deans, campus chief and assistant campus chief — have also remained vacant for the last ten months.

Resident Doctors’ Association TUTH chapter, Faculty Doctors’ Association and students have expressed solidarity with Dr KC. They have halted OPD services at the hospital, which receives around 1,500 patients every day.

Prof Dr Dinesh Binod Pokhrel, chairperson of the Tribhuvan University Teacher’s Association, Institute of Medicine, said that they have not halted services formally.

Newly appointed Acting Dean Dr Dharmakant Baskota said he was performing his duty as assigned by the university board. He said he was one of the senior doctors and eligible for the post.


NMA concerned


KATHMANDU: Nepal Medical Association (NMA) on Wednesday expressed concern towards the government’s indifference towards addressing the protest called by Professor Dr Govinda KC. Issuing a press statement, NMA has asked the government and other stakeholders to save Dr KC’s life. NMA has also expressed solidarity with KC’s demands.
