HETAUDA: Hetauda is developing into a paradise for drug smugglers. According to police, illegal drugs, including marijuana and brown sugar produced in Makwanpur district, are ferried to India and various parts of Nepal via Hetauda.
Most drug peddlers are nabbed either on tip-offs or during security check at Ratmate police post of Makwanpur district, Mawkanpur SP Purna Chandra Joshi said.
“Ratmate police post is the most active in regulating drug smuggling in the area,” he said.
As per our experience, youth in Motihari of India, Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Nawalparasi, Chitwan, Saptari, Sarlahi, Kavre and Kathmandu are involved in drug dealings, Joshi said.
Mostly people aged between 20 and 40 are involved in drug smuggling. However, police have also found 12-year-old and 78-year-old involved in smuggling contraband, he said.
Although eight police check posts are located between Raxaul of India and the Ratmate check post, most smugglers are arrested at Ratmate.
According to SP Joshi, smugglers use all kinds of vehicles including motorcycle, bus, truck and tankers for smuggling. However, most of them are reportedly take public vehicles.
Makwanpur police have detained 154 people on smuggling charges from various parts of the district in the last 10 months. Of them, 31 are in detention, Joshi said.
Police have also destroyed marijuana and opium cultivated in 89 bighas of land in Makwanpur in the past 10 months.
According to police, they only conduct security checks on suspects, so there is high chance for smugglers to escape as they do not have modern instrument for checking.
Last Wednesday, Manahari area police office seized six sacks of marijuana from the Katlekhola community forest. Police have destroyed 5.45 metric tonnes of marijuana in Makwanpur in the past 10 months, SP Joshi informed.
