KATHMANDU: Surgeons at the Norvic International Hospital today performed a heart surgery on former Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa after his initial recovery.
Senior Consultant Cardiologist Dr Bharat Rawat from Norvic Hopsital and Dr Nagendra Chauhan from Medanta, The Medicity, conducted a double Chamber Pace Maker Surgery.
A team of specialist under the leadership of Dr R R. Kasliwal had arrived this morning from Medanta, The Medicity, Delhi to see Thapa.
Dr Kasliwal expressed deep satisfaction over Thapa’s treatment at Norvic during a press meet at the hospital.
Dr Bharat Rawat, executive director at the hospital, said they removed the ventilator at around 1:00 pm today. Thapa is conscious now and breathing well, he said. “This is a positive development. Now we have to see how he behaves in the next 24 hours,” added Dr Rawat.
The doctors have considered Thapa’s survival as a ‘medical miracle’.
Thapa, 84, was rushed to the hospital yesterday morning after he suffered a severe heart problem and fainted during a joint meeting of Rastriya Janashakti Party and Rastriya Prajatantra Party.
Two days earlier, he had addressed a mass gathering at Khula Manch organised by 22 opposition parties.
He had no pulse, blood pressure, respiration and oxygen saturation was not recordable at the time he was taken to the emergency ward of the hospital.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai visited Norvic at 2:00 pm today to inquire about Thapa’s condition.
During the visit, PM thanked the entire Norvic team for saving Thapa’s life and wished for his speedy recovery.
Political leaders, including Madhav Nepal, Pashupati SJB Rana and ministers visited the hospital to wish Thapa a speedy recovery.
He is currently recovering in the Heart Command Centre of the hospital.
