HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE

CHITWAN: Regrouping of Maoist PLA fighters concluded in three cantonments — 1st Division in Chulachuli, Ilam, 3rd Division in Shaktikhor, Chitwan and 4th Division in Jhyaltungdanda, Nawalparasi, today while the process continued in 2nd Division Camp in Dudhauli, Sindhuli, 5th Division Camp in Dahaban, Rolpa, 6th Division Camp in Dasarathpur, Surkhet and 7th Division Camp in Talband, Kailiali.

Regrouping process in the 5th Division was halted today after the government monitors ran out of cheques to be distributed to the fighters opting for voluntary retirement.

The regrouping process is part of a deal to allow one more chance to those fighters who had earlier opted for integration. During earlier regrouping process, 9,705 Maoist fighters had shown interest to join the army. However, in the ongoing regrouping process, more than half have opted for voluntary retirement. As of today, 5,487 have given up on their earlier stance to join the army and chosen to receive retirement cheques.

In 1st Division in Chulachuli, 511 fighters (out of 796), have chosen voluntary retirement. Similarly, in 2nd Division in Dudhauli 346 fighters (out of 805) and in the 3rd Division in Shaktikhor, 1,587 (out of 2,214) have decided to take voluntary retirement.

The teams from the Secretariat of the Special Committee (for supervision, integration and rehabilitation of Maoist combatants) hope to conclude the regrouping process by tomorrow.
