Water level declines
ILAM: Stakeholders and the locals have expressed concern about the decreasing water level in Maipokhari in Ilam district. The locals complain that despite Maipokhari being listed in Ramsar List in 2008, the government has not taken any step for its conservation and the water level has been reducing considerably. In an interaction programme organised on Friday at Maipokhari by the District Plant Resources Office to mark the World Wetlands Day, locals called for an immediate action plan for its conservation and development. The water level is below the zero mark put for measuring water, said a local Nhim Dorje Sherpa. However, DFO Rajendra Kafle said the decrease can be confirmed only after a detailed survey is done. According to Sherpa, as the pond is in a religious forest, the decreasing water flow is also a matter of concern for the Forest Office. Chief of District Plant Resources Office Raghuram Parajuli said the pine trees in the forest might have caused the decrease in the water level.
