LALITPUR: Laxmi Hyundai Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC) defeated Three Star Club 2-1 in a friendly match to make the winning start under their new coach Krishna Thapa here at the ANFA Technical Centre grounds on Saturday. Bikash Singh Chhetry provided MMC the lead in the 11th minute, while second-half substitute Sulav Maskey doubled the tally two minutes after the interval. Winger Anil Ojha pulled one back for Three Star in the 55th minute. It was the first match for veteran Thapa, who signed one-year contract with the six-time ‘A’ Division League champions MMC in July.
Laxman claims title
KATHMANDU: Laxman Kafle and Dilmaya Karki claimed the Valleywide Inter-school Road Race gold medals here on Saturday. Laxman clocked 17 minutes 21.90 seconds to finish the boys’ section 5km race ahead of Raju Shrestha (18:15.7) and Bishnu Karki (19:31.5). Dilmaya won the girls’ 3km race in 14:14 minutes. Sangita Khadka (14:16) and Sharmila (14:38) won the silver and bronze medals respectively. The top three finishers in both the sections received Rs 15,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively.
Beach Volleyball
KATHMANDU: Nepal Volleyball Association (NVA) is organising the third National Men’s Beach Volleyball Tournament at the newly-constructed court at Lakeside in Pokhara from September 27. A total of 18 teams — two each from five development regions, three departmental sides and University Sports Association Nepal — are participating in the three-day tournament, informed the volleyball governing body. The top four teams will receive Rs 20,000, Rs 15,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively. — HNS
Pyramid in quarters
KATHMANDU: Newson Puri scored 15 points as Pyramid International College defeated Brooklyn 32-10 to advance to the boys’ section quarter-finals of the first Inter-school and College (+2) Basketball Tournament here on Saturday. Premier, Kathmandu Unified, VS Niketan and Namgyal College also won their boys’ section matches. Premier beat Bridgewater 35-31, Kathmandu Unified thrashed Kumari College 34-13, VS Niketan dispatched Gyan Niketan 32-11 and Namgyal saw off Classic College International 31-19.
Greenland win opener
KATHMANDU: Hosts Greenland International School ‘A’, Golden Peak, Neric, Himalayan Health Care Academy (HHCA) and Mt Kailash began the seventh Kwiks Greenland Inter-school Basketball Championships with wins here on Saturday. In the senior boys’ section, Greenland overwhelmed Kathmandu Vidhyakunja 38-4, Golden Peak sneaked past Bhadrakali 41-39, Nerik overcame Sapta Gandaki 20-14, HHCA eased past Ganesh 31-20 and Mt Kailash beat Minar 23-14. Likewise, Golden Peak thrashed Nepal Model School 19-5, Trungram International Academy edged past Greenland ‘B’ 18-12 and Ganesh saw off Valley Public 20-10 in junior boys categories.
PABSON Badminton
KATHMANDU: Prabin Gurung of Samakhushi Boarding School, Dipesh Thapa Mt Glory, Diprish Bajracharya of Pushpa Sadan, Ram Sundar Adhikari of Hebron and Nischal Khatri of Cambridge Public School entered the boys’ singles quarter-finals of the second Inter-school PABSON Cup Badminton Tournament here on Saturday. Likewise, Babita Khatri and Star Khadka of Kotdevi, Kamala Pun of Angel’s Heart, Buddha Rai of Manang Children and Shristi Rai of Hebron made it to the girls’ singles last eight. Earlier, Private and Boarding Schools’ Organisation, Nepal (PABSON) Kathmandu District President Gopal Acharya inaugurated the two-day tournament.
