Minister wants clean judges

KATHMANDU: Minister for Law and Justice, Brijesh Kumar Gupta, has said only competent individuals with a clean image would be appointed as judges.

Releasing a book on ‘Legal reforms to ensure the rights of women, dalit, and marginalized communities’ in the capital today, Minister Gupta said competent and fair persons could be appointed in the judiciary in an inclusive and transparent manner. On the occasion, Nepal Bar Association Chairman Prem Bahadur Khadka said only democratic constitution with the guarantee of independent judiciary, press freedom and rule of law could be accepted. Former chairman of the NBA, Shambhu Thapa, said the judges should be appointed on the recommendation of the Bar. In order to appoint a judge, a rational and judicious decision should be taken, he added.

NBA General Secretary Bijay Mishra drew the government’s attention towards the need to introduce a Bar Academy Act. NBA central member Anita Manandhar said the rights of women, indigenous, dalit and themarginalised people should be ensured.
