Nepal advocates Arms Trade Treaty in UN

KATHMANDU: Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations Gyan Chandra Acharya yesterday reminded that millions of lives and livelihoods have perished, and serious violations of fundamental human rights have occurred due to irresponsible and illicit transfer of weapons and munitions around the troubled parts of the world.
Delivering his statement at the UN Conference on Arms Trade Treaty in New York, the Nepali envoy emphasized that a robust Arms Trade Treaty would contribute to preventing illicit trade in conventional arms including small arms and weapons and related items and thereby save millions of lives from the scourge of armed conflicts and release some resources for peace, prosperity and development.
He said many reports have highlighted that billions of dollars are lost every year due to wars, civil wars, and insurgency and armed conflict around the globe. “By way of concluding a strong and robust Arms Trade Treaty, we could help reverse this process,” Acharya was quoted in a statement issued by the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations.
Acharya recalled that Nepal had an opportunity to host a Regional Seminar in 2010 in Kathmandu for exchange of views among countries in South and Central Asian region on Arms Trade Treaty. He stated that an Arms Trade Treaty should adopt the highest possible common international standards for import, export and transfer of conventional arms while ensuring the right of all States to manufacture, develop, acquire, import, export, transfer and retain conventional arms for self-defence and security needs, according to the statement.
The UN Conference on Arms Trade Treaty is being held from July 2 to 27 at UN headquarters in New York with a view to concluding an Arms Trade Treaty.
