KATHMANDU: Nepal and China are all set to review bilateral security issues, including the control of criminal activities in the border areas, bilateral security systems and intelligence sharing to curb illegal activities on the border between the two countries.

The review will be taking place during a joint-security panel meeting being held in Beijing next week.

A seven-member Nepali delegation led by Home Secretary Sushil Jang Rana today left Kathmandu for the Nepal-China Second Joint Law-enforcement Cooperation meeting to be held on Monday.

China Division Chief at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambika Luintel, Under Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs Shambhu Ghimire, AIG of Nepal Police Arjun Jung Shahi and AIG of Armed Police Force Durja Kumar Rai and Director at the National Investigation Department Nabraj Thapa are among the other delegates.

The Nepali delegation will hold discussion with high-level officials of China’s Ministry of Public Security regarding the measures to be taken for better management of the border.

On the agenda are curbing criminal activities along the border that covers over 1,400 kilometres and sharing of intelligence between the security officials of the two countries deployed along the border, said Bhola Siwakoti, acting secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs.

A source said that China will most probably be raising the issue of transportation of illegal sandalwood to Tibet from India via Nepal — despite regular security surveillance.

They are also likely to urge Nepali security official to be more vigilant with regard to activities carried out in the name of Free Tibet movement in the border areas and elsewhere.

The Nepali side, on the other hand, is likely to seek Chinese help in relation to capacity building and enhancement of professionalism in the security bodies of Nepal during talks with Chinese officials.

The first meeting of the joint mechanism was held in Kathmandu in 2010.

The biennial meeting convenes in Nepal and China alternately.
