BIRATNAGAR: Opposition parties including the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML today staged a show of strength in Biratnagar against Baburam Bhattarai-led government.
However, speakers who addressed the mass meeting spent their time in chiding the Unified CPN-Maoist party and Baburam Bhattarai-led government instead of offering any way out to the country from the prevailing political crisis.
Addressing the mass meeting in Biratnagar’s Sahid Maidan, CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal stressed on the need to expedite the agitation to oust Bhattarai from the power. He said the incumbent government had bled the country more than the Ranas had done in 104 years.
Khanal went on to say that their agitation would be now decisive and it would overthrow Bhattara-led government. “Our protest is not for power and position, but for constitution and election,” he added. He accused the incumbent government of putting national independence and dignity in danger.
On his part, Nepali Congress senior leader Sher Bahadur Deuba said Bhattarai was hell-bent on staying in power at the cost of democracy and freedom. He said the Bhattarai-led government was a setting sun, and their protests would topple it sooner than later.
CPN-UML leader KP Sharma Oli went to the extent of describing the Unified CPN-Maoists as monkeys adamant on ruining the country. Commenting on Prime Minister Bhattarai’s remarks that the government would haul the opposition parties to Constituent Assembly elections in the same manner cattle are controlled and towed with nose rings, Oli said the opposition would bring the Maoist on track by using lathis.
Opposition party activists and leaders had taken out a protest rally in various places in Biratnagar. Security situation was heightened during the mass meeting at Biratnagar’s Sahid Maidan.
