HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai said the Rio+20 Conference provided a generational opportunity to set in motion a new development paradigm for promoting sustainable development and eradicating poverty in an integrated manner.

Delivering his opening remarks on “LDCs and Rio+20” on the margins of United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, Bhattarai emphasized that poverty eradication and environment conservation should reinforce each other.

The PM was presiding over the event as Nepal’s capacity of Global Coordinating Bureau of LDCs, a UN group of 48 poorest countries around the globe.

The prime minister highlighted three acute challenges being faced by the least developed countries in terms of structural constraints and high level of vulnerability to internal and external shocks including severe and disproportionate impact of climate change.

PM Bhattarai particularly stressed there would be “no global sustainability without ensuring sustainable development in LDCs”.

“The LDCs are looking forward to a successful outcome of Rio+20 that should herald a new era for an inclusive, sustainable and forward-looking global development agenda, and this side event would further strengthen and enhance global cooperation and support to promote sustainable development in a more integrated and coherent manner,” he said.

While addressing the function, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon emphasized that the international community should give due priority to the most vulnerable group of countries such as the LDCs. He also stressed that in all the priority areas of sustainable development, concerns and interests of the LDCs should be fully taken into account.

According to the Embassy of Nepal to Brazil, about two dozen Heads of State/Government, including the Prime Ministers of China, Turkey and Solomon Islands as well as Deputy Prime Minister of United Kingdom spoke on the occasion.

The leaders highlighted specific difficulties and challenges confronted by the LDCs and expressed their continued interest, solidarity and support in the development efforts of the LDCs to achieve sustainable development in these countries.

Participants in the event lauded the role played by Nepal in promoting the interests and concerns of the LDCs in the international fora as the Chair the LDCs.
