Royal toast up for auction

AGENCIES

A piece of toast from the buttery batch that was served to Prince Charles before his wedding to Lady Diana Spencer is to go up for auction. The toast was sneaked out on the

morning of July 29, 1981 by Prince Charles’ maidservant when she spotted he had leftovers. She then took that piece home and placed in on her

mantle piece in a Royal Crown Derby cup. Now the piece of toast is going up for auction at Hansons auctioneers in Derbyshire. It is expected to reach up to £500.

What astronauts are supposed to eat

Imagine if you had to decide now what you wanted to eat for every meal for the next two-and-a-half years? That’s what scientists working on the first manned mission to Mars, planned for the 2030s, are doing. It will take astronauts six months to get to the Red Planet. They will be there for around 18 months and it will take six months to get home. So, they’ll need a lot of food on board. The menu must keep a group of six to eight astronauts healthy. They have come up with about 100 vegetarian recipes as it is impossible to preserve meat and daily products long enough to take to Mars and back. —

Future-planning baboons

Scientists have discovered that baboons can tell the difference between written words and made-up ones. Their research also found that other apes can do multiplication and make plans for the future. Scientists think that many abilities, including working out what others are thinking, are not just human traits. For several years, they have observed chimps collect and store rocks as weapons for later use. Then, in May, scientists found that chimps are capable of deceiving others. They observed the animals creating haystacks to conceal stones from opponents, which is what countries do with weapons.
