KATHMANDU: ‘Karelian Fascination’ — the Russian ball dance show was performed by the dance ensemble ‘Rhythm’ from the Republic of Karelia of Russian Federation at Russian Cultural centre, Kamalpokhari on February 1.

Latin American and European ball dances were performed by six couples while included tango, slow waltz, jazz, rumba, samba, rock and roll and unique dance forms like Illusion, Spanish Suite, Storm et cetera. The flexible Russian dancers lit the stage on fire with their sizzling performances and left the audience in awe.

The bright costumes, makeup and the graceful dances perfectly coordinated with each other. With the beautifully synchronised dances, it felt like they just glided across the floor.

The highly qualified dancers prepared the special programme to put the audience in touch with the customs of Karelian people through dances as Russia has a rich tradition of ball dance and is an inherent part of Russian social life.

Chief Guest Keshab Man Shakya, Minister for Science, Technology and Environment said, “Ernest Hemmingway said people should feel the weather while reading. Likewise, while watching the

dances, I felt like I am

in Karelia. Though Karelia is a cold place, the dances were hot.”

The show started with a short film about Karelia, which is acknowledged for its natural beauty, carefully preserved fold traditions and unique spirits. The audience could witness the beauty of ‘Kizhi’, an island of Karelia, through the short film.

The performances certainly put the audience in touch with the profound and beautiful art of ball dance.
