SINDHUPALCHOWK: Police today seized 16 kg of red sandalwood when it was being smuggled to Khasa.
The red sandalwood was found hidden in a private Toyota Corolla car that was left unclaimed on the road, about three kilometers from Dolalghat of Kavre along the Araniko highway.
DSP Basanta Lama of Sindhupalchow said police spotted the car on suspicion and checked it as no one came to claim it even a day after it had been left unclaimed near Bandeu on Tuesday. “We found the
sandalwood hidden in the chassis of the car,” said DSP Lama.
As per some eyewitnesses, some youths who had come with the sandalwood had stayed at Dolalghat for the whole day on Tuesday and headed to Birhabise via the highway at about 8 pm.
Later as they had reached near Bandeu, the youths fled leaving the car fearing of possible checking. A
police post is situated about 500 meters from where they left the car.
According to DSP Lama, the smugglers had made the logs appear as normal timber by dying them with colour. In order to dupe us, they had also kept 12 kg
of logs of Saj tree in the vehicle, said the DSP.
Police said they have handed the seized wood over to the District Forest Office.
