KATHMANDU: Two jailbirds doing time in the Central Jail and Dilli Bazaar Prison died in course of treatment yesterday, police said.
The deceased are Udaya Sharma (41) of Amahara- 4, Mahottarai and Bharat Koirala (59) of Kathmandu. They were doing time in the Central Jail and Dilli Bazaar Prison for arms trade and fraud, respectively.
Police informed that Sharma was taken to Teku Hospital after he complained chest ache and had high fever on Tuesday. Koirala died due to renal failure at the Lalitpur-based KIST Medical College where was admitted on July 12.
Officials claimed that the jailbirds were rushed to hospitals after they were diagnosed with ailments. They denied that the deaths were associated with poor physical infrastructure at overcrowded prisons. Kin of the deceased were also by their side in hospitals, police said.
According to statistics, the Central Jail, which is supposed to accommodate 1,200 inmates, has 1,980 inmates. The situation at the Dilli Bazaar Prison is worse. The prison with the capacity to accommodate 180 inmates has 662 inmates at present. More than 100 inmates of this dilapidated and congested jail had fallen ill in April.
