Cricket Association of Nepal may be readmitted into ICC after June

KATHMANDU: International Cricket Council (ICC) has hinted that it would initiate the process to readmit the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) as its member in few months.

In a statement on Sunday, the international governing body for cricket said the Nepal Advisory Group, which was formed after suspending Nepal from ICC in April 2016, agreed on a Terms of Reference for the work and a community consultation process by which members of the Nepali cricket community will give inputs for the revised Constitution.

The ICC advisory committee was formed in October to recommend amendments to the CAN's constitution in order to hold fresh elections for new leadership.

There are six members in the committee, and two others -- CAN's elected chairman and general secretary before ICC axe fell on CAN -- who had rejected the ICC proposal are on the verge of joining it to bring an end to the long-lasting controversy in Nepal cricket.

"An ICC delegation will return to Kathmandu around the time the World Cricket League Championship matches against Kenya are held on 11 and 13 March and will decide on a timetable for the adoption of the revised Constitution and subsequent elections," the ICC said.

"Following this, Nepal’s membership of the ICC will be tabled for consideration at the ICC Annual General Meeting in June."

The ICC made the announcement after the Nepal Advisory Group's meeting in Kathmandu on Saturday.

Nepal's membership was suspended for breach of Article 2.9 of the ICC’s Articles of Association in the wake of government interference in CAN.

After the suspension, ICC cut off funding for CAN but Nepali team was allowed to continue participating in international cricket events.
