MAKWANPUR: Tribhuvan Army Club began the 17th men’s and second women’s National Hockey Tournament with double wins here at the Institute of Forestry grounds today.

In men’s section, defending champions TAC registered a 8-0 victory over Eastern Region. Dev Singh Dhami scored four goals alone, while Ram Shah struck three and Satya Narayan Chaudhary netted one for the Army team.

In another match of the same category, Far-western Region defeated Central Region 1-0. Suresh Prasad Joshi scored the solitary goal of the match. In women’s section, holders TAC edged past Far-western Region 1-0. Sarita Meche netted the solitary goal of the match. In another match, Central Region defeated Eastern Region 1-0 riding on a goal from Sima Khadka.

A total of six teams — five regions and TAC — are taking part in the men’s section of the tournament under the NSC Championship. The men’s section tournament is being played under the league cum knockout format.

The women’s section features five teams — TAC and regional teams except for Mid-western Region — will play against each other in the round robin tournament. The final is slated for January 19. Earlier, deputy Mayor of Hetauda Sub-metropolitan City Mina Lama inaugurated the tournament.
