Eight boxers earn SA Games berths

Boxers Lalit Maharjan, Mala Rai and Sangeeta Sunuwar won their respective weight categories to confirm berths in the 13th South Asian Games slated for December 1-10 in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Tribhuvan Army Club boxer Maharjan defeated Deewana Sherma of Nepal Police Club 5-0 in the final of the women’s 48kg, while Nepal APF Club’s Rai recorded a 5-0 victory over Roshani Rai of Province-3 in the 51kg weight category.

Likewise, APF boxer Sunuwar defeated Sabina Shrestha of TAC 5-0 in the women’s 60kg section.

In men’s section, five boxers Tej Bahadur Deuba, Sanil Shahi, Bhupendra Thapa, Arjun Sigu and Ashish Dawadi secured qualifications for the SA Games. TAC boxer Deuba defeated Chandra Bahadur Thapa of NPC 5-0, while Shahi of Province-3 earned a walkover win from Bimal Rokka after the TAC boxer was declared medically unfit as he was suffering from typhoid.

Likewise, NPC’s Bhupendra Thapa defeated TAC’s Suresh Nepali 4-1 in the 64kg weight category final, while TAC’s Sigu beat APF’s Gokul Gurung 4-1 in the 91kg section.

TAC’s Ashish Dawadi earned a RSC decision over Sunny Juwa of Province-3 after referee had to stop the bout due to injury to the latter in the second round.

Another eight boxers will earn qualification on the final day of selection on Tuesday.
