ICC officials meet cricket stakeholders

Kathmandu: The International Cricket Council officials today met with different stakeholders in their bid to assess the situation of cricket in Nepal.

Exactly three months after suspending Cricket Association of Nepal, the ICC deployed a three-member team of Asia Development Manager Bandula Warnapura, Finance Manager Amar Sheikh and Legal Section Chief Paul McMohan are in Kathmandu to prepare a report regarding the current scenario of the sport in Nepal.

The ICC had suspended the membership of CAN on April 25 alleging the government of interfering into the cricketing matters and also accused the board of not holding free and fair elections. The ICC step came after National Sports Council formed an ad hoc committee under Ramesh Silwal in March, refusing to give recognition to the elected committee led by Chatur Bahadur Chand. The ICC board meeting later approved the suspension and decided to send a team to assess the situation.

The team today met with former presidents Binay Raj Pandey and Tanka Aangbuhang, elected committee president Chand and his team members, coach Jagat Tamatta and skipper Paras Khadka. The ICC delegates discussed about Nepal’s preparation for the upcoming tournament with coach Tamatta and skipper Khadka, while they collected facts about the elections and current situation of cricket from former and current presidents of CAN.

Former President Pandey said the team inquired about the past and present of Nepali cricket. “I was not in position to give them the details of the current controversy and situation of the sport,” said Pandey, who led the CAN until 2011. “So, I had prepared a note and I handed over that to them,” added Pandey. “They are also scheduled to meet with stakeholders of the sport and have assured me of meeting later.”

Elected committee president Chand said his committee provided the ICC officials with all the details from 2011. “They asked us about the elections and current scenario. We have given them all the details they wanted,” he said. The ICC delegates are scheduled to meet NSC Member Secretary Keshab Kumar Bista and the ad hoc committee tomorrow. The ICC officials have invited the presidents and general secretaries of both the committees along with NSC Member Secretary Bista for a joint meeting for Thursday.
