Karki edges past Sherpa, defends title of Indian Ambassador’s Cup

Kathmandu, March 17

Pavitra Kumar Karki defended the title of the Indian Ambassador’s Cup Golf Tournament here at the Gokarna Golf Club today.

Karki won the trophy on count back after he was tied on 38 points with Ang Tshiring Sherpa. The 11-handicapper Karki scored 19 points on both halves, while the six-handicap amateur Sherpa added 17 points on the back nine after he had 21 before taking the turn. Karki received the Taylormade M1 driver along with the trophy, while Sherpa got a golf bag.

Tashi Tshiring won the gross section award with 36 points and fired five birdies to claim the most birdies trophy. Suhrid Ghimire won the senior’s section trophy with 37 points. Rekha Ghimire lifted the women’s category award with 38 points, while Pratima Sherpa came second with 35 points. Tashi Dong received the most pars award with 12 pars.

SSP (retd) Rajendra Shrestha claimed the best front nine award with 21 points, while Pavitra Kumar Karki was the best scorer in the back nine with 19 points. Prithvi Malla won the longest drive trophy and Srijay Acharya received the closest-to-the-pin award. Acharya missed the Hole-in-One prize of Tata Tiago car by one foot.

A total of 88 golfers, including five women and 18 seniors, took part in the tournament which was played under stableford 3/4 handicap format.

Indian Ambassador to Nepal Manjeev Singh Puri, his spouse Namrita Puri, CEO of Nepal SBI Bank Anukool Bhatnagar and President of Gokarna Golf Club Suhrid Ghimire handed over the prizes to the winners. Senior golfers Lt Gen (retd) KNS Thapa and Dr Rita Thapa were felicitated on the occasion.
