Nepal shock South Africa in T20 World Cup for Blinds

KATHMANDU: Nepal defeated South Africa by six wickets to register their first victory of the Twenty20 World Cup for Blinds at the Delhi Saket DDA grounds in India on Thursday.

Invited to take the first strike after Nepal skipper Kritan Shrestha Duwal won the toss, South Africa scored 146-5 in their allotted 20 overs before Nepal raced to 149-4 in 17.3 overs.

It was Nepal's first win against South Africa and second victory overall in the World Cup. Nepal had beaten Bangladesh in 2012.

In today's match, Nepal made a flying start to the run chase with openers Ramesh Bahadur Baniya and Sunil Rana Magar adding 69 runs inside nine overs.

Baniya struck a four in his 24 off 28, while Rana Magar scored 35-ball 38 with the help of a boundary.

Sunil Subedi Chhetri remained unbeaten on 46 off just 33 balls as Nepal reached the target with 21 balls to spare.

Buhle Bhidla, Doctor William Malinga, Tefo Lesley Classen and Sonwabile Bidla took one wicket each for South Africa.

Earlier, Sonwabile Bidla top scored for South Africa with 57 off 59 balls hitting two fours, while opener Dominic Scott Adriaans scored 33 and Buhle Bhidla scored a quick fire 32 off 25 balls hitting two fours.

Sunil Rana Magar was the pick of the Nepali bowlers taking 2-26 from four overs, while skipper Kritan Shrestha Duwal pocketed one wicket and Sunil Thapa Magar and Lok Bahaur Thapa affected two run outs.

Nepal had lost their first two matches against Australia  and Bangladesh.

Nepal are scheduled to face Pakistan at the DDA grounds tomorrow.
