Nepali team finishes second in Dhaka

The Nepal national golf team finished runner-up in the Orion Group 33rd Bangladesh Amateur Championship at the Kurmitola Golf Club in Dhaka on Thursday.

Nepali golfers Sukra Bahadur Rai and Tanka Bahadur Karki posted the 36-hole total of 10-over 298 to win the second position on count back after they were tied with Bangladesh ‘B’. Both Rai and Karki fired three-over 75 in the second round. Karki had carded even-par 72, while Rai had played four-over 76 on the first day. The duo had won Bhutan Amateur Championship in September last year, while Karki was the overall winner in Thimpu, where Rai was third.

The ‘C’ team of Bangladesh won the trophy with the score of 297, with their ‘A’ team finishing fourth at 301. A total of nine teams from Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Afghanistan and Bhutan participated in the tournament.

In individual category, Nepali golfer Karki is at the fifth position with the score of three-over 147. Bangladesh’s Akbar Hossain is at the top with two-under 142 after he carded second straight 71, while his teammate Shafique Bagha and Hong Kong’s Shing Fung NG share the second position at one-over 145. GP Sisira Kumara of Sri Lanka is further one stroke behind at fourth, while Nepal’s Rai is seventh at 151. Out of the 104 players, 53 survived the cut applied at 28-over 172.
