Shakya wins Shikhar Golf Tournament crown after three-way tie

Kathmandu, December 17

Purna Shakya won the title of the Shikhar Golf Tournament 2016 here at the Gokarna Golf Club today.

Played under sableford 3/4 handicap format, Shakya emerged victorious on count back after he was tied on 38 points with Atma Ram Simkhada and Prem Gurung. Shakya scored 20 points on the back nine after earning 18 on the first half, while Simkhada scored 19 each on two halves and Gurung added 17 on the back nine to his 21 points.

Shakya received Taylormade speed blade iron set and two mountain flight tickets along with the trophy. Simkhada, who had completed his round on Friday along with Gurung, finished second, also on count back. He received the runner-up trophy, Taylormade driver and two mountain flight tickets.

Tenzing Tshiring claimed the gross section award with 38 points and got Taylormade iron set and two mountain flight tickets. Tshiring also bagged the most birdies award with eight birdies. Lt Gen (retd) KNS Thapa won the senior category award with 34 points, while former Chief of the Army Staff Pyar Jung Thapa bagged the super senior section award with 32 points. Pratima Sherpa won the women’s category trophy with 30 points, while Rekha Ghimire came second with 29. The winners of senior, super senior and women’s categories got trophy, gift hampers and two mountain flight tickets. Shreeyog Basnyat won the junior section title with 20 points and got a trophy and Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Tashi Dong won the longest drive award, while Pradeep Kumar Shrestha bagged the closest-to-the-pin trophy. In all, 160 players took part in the two-day tournament sponsored by Shikhar Insurance Company Limited. Chairman of Beema Samiti Prof Dr Fatta Bahadur KC, Chairman of Shikhar Insurance Bikash Rana, CEO Dip Prakash Panday, President of Gokarna Golf Club Suhrid Ghimire and Captain Joseph Nathan among others handed over the prizes.
