Thai lifter Chomchuen shatters world record

Thailand’s Teerapat Chomchuen set new world record in the Youth and Junior Asian Weightlifting Championships here at the Nepal Army Sports Complex today.

Chomchuen lifted 127kg weight in clean and jerk to set new mark in the youth category. Chomchuen surpassed Thailand’s Sinphet Kruaithong’s mark of 126kg lifted during the Asian Youth Championships in Thailand in 2011. Chomchuen, who lifted 95kg in snatch, had a total weight of 222kg in Group B category event. Nepal’s Tusar Budha Magar lifted a total of 137kg, including 62kg in snatch and 75kg in clean and jerk.

In junior’s section, Nepal’s Ram Kumar Yadav lifted 75kg in snatch and 90kg in clean and jerk for a total lift of 165kg to finish fourth, while Ganesh Rajbahak lifted 150kg — 68kg in snatch and 82kg in clean and jerk — to finish sixth among six participants.

Yadav, who competed for the first time in an international event, said he got the opportunity to learn techniques. “I did well in the snatch but my performance in clean and jerk was not satisfactory. However, the event provided me with the opportunity to learn new techniques of the sport,” said Yadav, who made a failed attempt to lift 93kg in clean and jerk as well as 78kg in snatch.

Meanwhile, Ormila Devi Konsam of India lifted a total of 127kg weight — 55kg in snatch and 72kg in clean and jerk — to win 44kg weight category gold medal in youth category, while Liu Hui of Chinese Taipei came second with a lift of 103kg — 45kg in snatch and 58kg in clean and jerk.

In 48kg, Thailand’s Sukcharoen Thunya lifted 180kg — 81kg in snatch and 99kg in clean and jerk — to win gold medal, while her teammate Nanthawong Chiraphan lifted a total of 172kg — 74kg in snatch and 98kg in clean and jerk — and finished second. Vietnam’s Ngo Thi Quyen lifted a total of 169kg, including 74kg in snatch and 95kg in clean and jerk, and claimed third spot.
