Army win team championship

Kathmandu, August 28

Tribhuvan Army Club won the team championship title of the fourth Nationwide and first Novice Boxing Tournament here at the International Sports Complex today.

TAC claimed 10 gold and three silver medals to lift the championship in senior category. They bagged six gold and two silver medals in men’s category and added four gold and one silver medals in the women’s section. Similarly, Kathmandu Youth Boxing Club and Naxal Boxing Club were the joint team champions in junior category. Both the teams claimed one each gold and silver medals and two bronze.

Manohar Basnet of Jawalakhel Boxing Club defeated Gokul Gurung of Nepal APF Club to win the 81kg section gold medal in the last bout of the day. Basnet, who made his return to the ring earlier this month after almost two years, made it two in a row. “It was a hard-fought win and I got too tired at the end,” said Basnet. “I had done enough training, but I think I got tired because of lack of proper diet and may be because I had to lose four kilograms for the bout,” he said.

Basnet, known as MaxB, had faced disciplinary action from Nepal Boxing Association that kept him out of the ring since he quit the national team training ahead of the 2014 Asian Games. He marked the ring return with a gold medal in the first Inter-club Valleywide Men’s Open Boxing Tournament on August 1.

Mahendra KC of TAC won the 91kg weight category gold beating Om Prasad Gurung of Western Region, while his teammate Shyam Khadka of TAC edged past Dinesh Adhikari of Damak in the above-91kg final. Similarly, TAC’s Dipesh Lama won the 75kg weight category final, Bishnu Ghale became champion in the 69kg and Deepak Shrestha claimed gold in the 64kg and Bhupendra Thapa of Nepal Police Club won gold in 60kg weight category.

In the women’s section, Binita Thapa Magar beat Punam Rawal in the 64kg weight category final, while Saraswati Rana Magar earned victory against Sonam Rokka in the 60kg section. Niru Gurung became champion in the 57kg weight category defeating Maya Chaudhary.

Similarly, Lalita Maharjan won the 48kg section gold, Minu Gurung finished first in 51kg and Bimala Shrestha bagged 54kg weight category gold medal. In Novice section, Kamal Thapa of Kathmandu, Niwash Chand of Kanchanpur and Saroj Sewa of Jawalakhel  won gold medals.
