Week-long event to celebrate Olympic Day

Lalitpur, June 17

Nepal Olympic Committee today kicked off a week-long event to celebrate Olympic Day on June 23.

NOC President Jeevan Ram Shrestha inaugurated the event, which will feature various sports activities and competitions, amidst a programme at the Lawn Tennis Complex. As per the schedule, tennis and basketball events began today, while golf tournament is slated for Sunday.

Similarly, Kabbadi and taekwondo events will be organised on Monday. Judo players will assist in traffic management as part of the Olympic Day celebration on the same day.

Likewise, pentathlon will be held on June 20, while boxing, kurash, shooting and archery tournaments will be organised the following day.

Sambo, fencing, swimming, squash, chess, sepak takraw and football tournaments will be played on June 22. The Olympic Day celebrations will end on June 23.

Meanwhile, NOC President Shrestha said various programmes were being held across the country in coordination with 25 sports associations would help in promoting the core values of Olympics, which include excellence, respect and friendship.

Shrestha also said that the Olympic Day should be used as an opportunity to promote peace and friendship. “Olympics is not just for sportsmen. It is also for establishing peace, development and friendship in the society,” he added.
