Eindhoven, May 5:
AC Milan reached its 10th European Cup final despite losing to PSV Eindhoven 3-1 in the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals. Massimo Ambrosini headed in the deciding goal in the first minute of injury time to give the six-time European champion a spot in the final on away goals after a 3-3 draw on aggregate.
Milan will face Liverpool in the final on May 25 in Istanbul, Turkey. Liverpool beat Chelsea 1-0 on Tuesday to win the two-leg series 1-0 on aggregate.
Milan was trailing by two goals and looked to be heading to extra time when Kaka crossed from the goalkeeper’s right to Ambrosini, who nodded the ball past PSV goalkeeper Gomes.
Phillip Cocu gave the hosts a chance for the upset one minute later when he volleyed in a header from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. Cocu also scored with a header in the 65th minute, sending home a cross from Lee Young-pyo. Park Ji-sung had given PSV the lead in the ninth minute. The South Korea international sent a pass to Vennegoor of Hesselink in the box, but the ball bounced clear and Park followed up with a hard shot that beat Milan goalkeeper Dida.
PSV nearly scored another in the 28th when Vennegoor of Hesselink headed a free kick off the crossbar. Theo Lucius also had a chance in first-half injury time, but his shot was saved by Dida.
Milan got a scare in the fifth minute when captain Paolo Maldini was kicked in the head as Vennegoor of Hesselink went for a high ball. Maldini was taken off the field on a stretcher but returned moments later. He was replaced at halftime.
Milan’s best chance to score came in the 11th when a dangerous cross floated across the front of the goal, but Gomes was able to keep it out of the net. PSV had a good chance in the 49th when Alex sent a rolling cross that Mark van Bommel let go for Park, but the South Korean couldn’t get a solid foot on the ball.
