Discord costs Gorkha development

GORKHA: A dispute among political parties has pushed to uncertainty the council meetings of the VDCs and a municipality in Gorkha district. The fate of the Village Council meeting, which is supposed to be held by January 14, is still undecided, adversely affecting the development works of the municipality and 66 VDCs. Failure to hold the meeting on time, for want of a political consensus, has deprived the local bodies of their pie of the Rs 133 million budget. No meeting among the parties has been held in the past six months. The bone of contention is the UCPN-Maoist demand of 50 per cent seats in the DDC mechanism. “There should be 50 per cent participation of the main opposition party,’’ demanded Maoist District Committee member Lekh Bahadur Thapa. Other political parties have, however, denied the Maoist proposal.
