Judges commit to judiciarys independence in statute

KATHMANDU: The two-day-long judges’ conference concluded here today issuing forth a 17-point proposal, including the commitment for independence of judiciary in the new statute. Supreme Court Justices and the Chief Judges of the Appellate Courts expressed their commitment to uphold the independence of the judiciary, rule of law and protection of human rights in the new statute. They also underlined the need to improve their works while respecting international conventions signed by the government. In order to promote public trust towards the judiciary, the judges expressed their avowed commitment to abide by letter and spirit of the judges code of conduct issued last year. They also underscored the need to ensure easy access to common people seeking justice, manage human resources to help the judiciary expedite its work on time and execute the verdicts of the courts by promulgating new acts and amending the old ones. The 17-point proposal also sought the active support of the government authorities with regard to amending laws. The judges’ conference also called on the government to provide judicial police, common accommodation facilities to judges and judicial staff. Concluding the conference, Chief Justice Anup Raj Sharma said that the conference helped sensitised all the judges about their duty and obligations and the code of conduct.
