KATHMANDU: The police on Monday detained 10 Tibetans for allegedly trying back-door entry to Nepal. The arrests were made at Lamabagar in Dolakha. The arrests came in the wake of mounting pressure on Nepal to curb what the northern neighbour calls anti-China activities exerted by Tibetan dissidents in Nepal. Nepal has long maintained 'One China' foreign policy. Deputy Superintendent of Police Bhakta Raj Shrestha, in-charge of Dolakha district, said that the arrests were made as they were trying to enter Nepal without any documentation. Later during the day, the arrested-- eight men and two women-- were handed over to the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu for further legal proceedings. “We are questioning the Tibetans. Probably, we will submit them to the Embassy of China in Kathmandu for deportation,” said Madhav Raj Regmi, the Director General, DoI. However, if they are handed over to the Chinese authorities it would be the first ever deportation of undocumented Tibetan immigrants from Nepal. DG Regmi argued that the next option was to hand them over to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Nepal is home to some 23,000 officially recognised refugees and a second-largest Tibetan exile community after India. Observers believe that thousands more are at Asylum in Nepal without notice. Nevertheless, Nepal considers Tibet to be an integral part of China and reiterates that it would not allow anti-China activities in its soil. The Tibetan exiles are frequently protesting the 'Chinese rule in their homeland', however.
