RUKUM: Sixty-nine families, whose relatives were killed by the government and the warring Maoists during the decade-long insurgency, are yet to get any relief. According to Pustak Chand, secretary, local peace committee, kin of 69 deceased are yet to get compensation. Addressing a programme organised by Human Rights and Communication Campaign Rukum, Chand said 536 families in the district had got Rs 100,000 each as relief so far. ‘’The rest of the families will also be provided relief after completing necessary formalities within a month,’’ Chand said. As many as 685 persons lost their lives during the Maoist insurgency. Of them, 593 were killed by the state while 92 were killed by the Maoists. Meanwhile, 400 individuals were abducted, 800 injured, 880 got disabled while 900 people were displaced during the insurgency. According to Jeeban Khadka, human rights activist, other kinds of victims had also not got compensation yet. He said the identification of all victims was yet to be completed. Other speakers in the programme demanded that the government provide relief to all conflict hit people at the earliest. One of the victims, Bir Bahadur Gharti of Hukam-1 said, ‘’The Maoists chased away 13 families including mine from the village five years ago but we have not got compensation from the government yet.’’ He also urged rights organisations to take an initiative to provide compensation. Victim Kanduli Pun said the land confiscated by the Maoists during the insurgency had not been returned. ‘’I am concerned whether or not the constitution is drafted on time,’’ victim Bir Bahadur Gharti said.
