KATHMANDU: Vehicle thieves are getting smarter. They not only steal two and four wheelers easily, but modify them beyond recognition, frustrating the owners. If this one of your foremost anxieties, then you can soon rest assured for the GPS tracking device is on its way. The Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD) will be introducing this device soon. This effort of the MPCD aims to curb the rising crime graph to which motorcycle-borne assailants and vehicle thieves in Kathmandu Valley have contributed substantially. The GPS tracking device won't cost more than Rs. 25,000 according to a preliminary estimate. SSP Rana Bahadur Chand, in-charge, MPCD told The Himalayan Times that the monitoring device will enable the police to nab vehicle thieves in the act itself. According to him the device can easily be installed inside vehicles. "The GPS tracking device will not only keep round-the-clock vigil of the vehicle but also help the police track down vehicles used by criminals," he explained. The GPS tracking system has two benefits - fights crime and controls vehicle theft, especially of motorcycles. According to Metropolitan Traffic Police Division, on average, three two-wheelers go missing in Kathmandu Valley every day. Motorcycle theft is many times higher than that of four-wheelers. "The Valley will see a sharp decline in vehicle theft and criminal activities involving the use of two and four-wheelers once the GPS system is introduced, provided it is mandatory for all," claimed SSP Chand. "This hi-tech system will help owners locate their vehicles, allowing the police to quickly pursue the stolen vehicle." The MPCD is holding talks with US and Hong Kong-based companies in this regard. "We will also invite bids from international companies elsewhere to make the GPS deal more transparent," he informed.
