LONDON: Fast bowler Jamie Overton has been called up into England’s squad for the remaining two one-day internationals against New Zealand, it was announced on Monday. He was selected after Yorkshire quick Liam Plunkett was ruled out with a thigh strain after the second ODI. Overton’s inclusion comes after twin brother Craig, an all-rounder, was called into the squad on Saturday after Chris Jordan was ruled out of the rest of the series with a side injury. Both of the 21-year-old Overtons, who play for Somerset, are uncapped at international level. Jamie Overton has appeared in just 14 senior one-day or List A county matches, where his 20 wickets have come at a respectable average of 27 apiece. Craig Overton has played 15 List A matches and while his figures may not be that impressive — he averages just 10.54 with the bat and 54.20 with the ball — he is regarded as one of the most promising young talents in the English game. QPR appoint Ruben LONDON: Relegated Queens Park Rangers have appointed Malaysian businessman Ruben Gnanalingam as co-chairman alongside owner Tony Fernandes. Gnanalingam joins Fernandes, chief executive Lee Hoos and director of football Les Ferdinand in the Championship club’s senior management team. “We have a lot of work to do in terms of re-establishing the traditions of QPR but with the two of us working at closer quarters with the senior management team... we believe we can create a positive future,” Malaysian Fernandes said in a news release on Monday. Rangers finished bottom of the League. Njoku banned STOCKHOLM: Nigeria defender Ugo Njoku has been banned for three games for lashing out at Australia’s Samantha Kerr with her elbow during her side’s 2-0 defeat in their World Cup Group D match in Winnipeg. The offence by Njoku went unpunished during the game but FIFA’s disciplinary committee later examined the video footage and handed her the ban. With Nigeria unlikely to progress in the tournament, Njoku will miss the final group game against the United States plus the country’s next two official matches. Lille forced to pay LAUSANNE: French side Lille must pay compensation of 300,000 euros to Belgian club Genk in relation to the signing of Divock Origi, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled on Monday. The decision made at CAS’ headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, overrules a previous verdict by football’s governing body FIFA in February 2014 which refused Genk’s demands for compensation. Belgian international Origi was trained by Genk before leaving at the age of 15 to sign a professional contract with Ligue 1 outfit Lille. Origi joined Liverpool for £10 million and was loaned to the French club last season.
