LONDON: Swansea City have signed St Etienne left back Franck Tabanou on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee, the Premier League club said on Friday. The 26-year-old made defender more than 100 appearances for Ligue 1 side Toulouse before enjoying two seasons with St Etienne. “I wanted to come to Swansea because I believe we are the perfect match,” Tabanou told the club’s website. Swansea, who finished eighth in the Premier League last season, signed Ghana forward Andre Ayew from Olympique de Marseille on a free transfer last week. Velappan stunned SINGAPORE: Former Asian Football Confederation general secretary Peter Velappan was left stunned by the departure of his successor Alex Soosay this week amid allegations he tried to instigate a cover up. Soosay quit on Wednesday after being suspended last month by the organisation following a Malay Mail report that he had asked a colleague to “tamper or hide” documents during a 2012 external audit of the AFC. Velappan, 79, who was general secretary from 1978-2007 before Soosay took charge, was disappointed by his fellow Malaysian. “I cannot understand why Alex would have risked destroying his career and name over such a stupid act like this,” Velappan told Singapore’s Today newspaper. The AFC have yet to publish details of the investigation into the claims against Soosay, who had worked for the body for 20 years. Tudor named coach ATHENS: Former Juventus and Croatia player Igor Tudor has been appointed as the new coach of PAOK Salonika, the Greek Super League club announced on Thursday. The 37-year-old, has penned a three-year contract with PAOK, the club said in a statement. Although his playing days with plagued with injury, Tudor made over 200 top-level appearances and won 55 caps for his country, playing in the 1998 and 2006 World Cups and the 2004 European Championship finals. He won two Serie A titles and two Italian Super Cups at Juve. As a coach, Tudor guided Hajduk Split to a Croatian Cup success in his first season in 2012-13. He takes the reins at a PAOK team that faded badly towards the end of last season after a promising start, with the Salonika club ending the season in third spot behind champions Olympiakos Piraeus and Panathinaikos. Clegg ‘satisfied’ BAKU: The chief organiser of the inaugural European Games says he is “incredibly satisfied” with the spectator turnout, despite the large number of empty seats at some events. Many sessions have taken place with banks of empty seats, even at sold-out events. Simon Clegg, the chief operating officer for the games, says the situation is “incredibly frustrating” for fans who are turned away but organisers can do little about it. Clegg said many fans are attending events for only part of the session, meaning their seats are empty much of the time. Clegg has also previously said there are “issues” with sponsors not using the tickets allocated to them, leading to “spare capacity.”
