MUMBAI: Ten more people died in Mumbai from drinking tainted liquor, raising the death toll to 94 in the worst such incident in India in more than a decade, police said on Sunday. The 10 men died late Saturday, three days after drinking the cheap liquor in Malvani, in Mumbai's Malad suburb. Around 40 others were being treated in hospitals, including 15 in critical condition. Eight officers and constables of the Malwani police station have been suspended on charges of connivance and negligence, said Deputy Commissioner Dhananjay Kulkarni. No further details were given. Devendra Fadnavis, the chief minister of Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, has ordered an inquiry into the cause of the deaths. Scribe burnt to death BALAGHAT: A 40-year-old local journalist was burnt to death allegedly by three persons, suspected to be closely linked to sand mafia, who set him ablaze apparently over his refusal to withdraw a court case, police said on Sunday. The burnt body of Sandeep Kothari, who was abducted from Katangi tehsil in Balaghat district two days back, was found lying near railway tracks at Sindi town in Wardha district of east Maharashtra last night, police said. Additional Superintendent of Police Neeraj Soni said Kothari was out on bail for the last two months in a rape case. 'His (Kothari's) body was identified by his brother,' it said. BSP demanded a CBI probe into the murder, saying the scribe's family was being 'tormented' by the sand mafia in the past as he had 'exposed' their activities. Former MLA from Balaghat, Kishore Samrite said Kothari was falsely implicated in more than 12 criminal cases. Police have already arrested three persons, identified as Rakesh Nasvani, Vishal Dandi and Brijesh Duharwal in connection with Kothari's murder. Airport violence KOZHIKODE: Nine CISF jawans were arrested on Sunday for their involvement in the June 10 violent clash with AAI employees at nearby Karipur airport which led to the death of a CISF jawan, police said. 'We have handed over the nine jawans to the police now,' Deputy Commandant of the central armed force, Daniel Dhanraj told PTI. Police also confirmed that the nine personnel were handed over by CISF authorities and charged under IPC sections including 147 (punishment for rioting), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty). They will be produced before the Manjeri CJM court in Malappuram district tomorrow, he said. 12 fishermen missing HYDERABAD: Twelve fishermen, who had ventured into the Bay of Bengal from Kakinada five days back, have reportedly gone missing and government authorities have launched a search operation to trace them. Apparently the engines of their boats developed a technical snag, an official said.
