MUMBAI: Former Portugal and Barcelona winger Simao Sabrosa has signed up as NorthEast United’s marquee player for the second season of the Indian Super League (ISL), the team said on Thursday. The 35-year-old Europa League winner has been without a club since last year and will replace World Cup-winning defender Joan Capdevila as the ISL team’s big-name signing. Simao made 85 appearances for Portugal and was part of the side that finished runner-up at the 2004 European Championship. He also won the Europa League with Atletico Madrid in 2010. Duo under arrest BUENOS AIRES: Two Argentine businessmen arrested last week in a sweeping probe of alleged corruption at FIFA were placed under house arrest on Wednesday pending a decision on extraditing them to the United States. Father and son sports marketing executives Hugo and Mariano Jinkis, the owners of the company Full Play, are among the 14 people indicted by the United States in its investigation into graft at the heart of world football’s governing body. Judge Claudio Bonadio rejected their request to be released and granted them house arrest only with bail payments of four million pesos for Hugo Jinkis and eight million pesos for Mariano. The duo handed themselves in to authorities in Buenos Aires last Thursday. Ajax sign Heitinga AMSTERDAM: John Heitinga is heading home to add some experience to Ajax’s young defense. The Amsterdam club announced on Thursday they have signed the veteran defender for one season with an option for a second year. Heitinga was out of contract after playing last season in the Bundesliga for Hertha Berlin. Heitinga is a product of Ajax’s storied youth development program and played 215 matches for the first team before heading overseas where he has played for Atletico Madrid, Everton and Fulham. He has made 87 international appearances for the Netherlands, including the ill-tempered 2010 World Cup final in Johannesburg, in which he was sent off as the Dutch lost 1-0 to Spain. Kittel to miss Tour PARIS: Still recovering from the effects of a long virus, German sprinter Marcel Kittel won’t be riding the Tour de France. Kittel was not included in the nine-man Team Giant-Alpecin roster for the three-week race unveiled on Thursday. The team will be led by another German sprinter, John Degenkolb, who achieved a rare double this season by winning both Paris-Roubaix and Milan-San Remo. Kittel, who won eight Tour stages over the past two years, said “not being nominated is without doubt the most difficult time of my career.” Kittel has been hampered throughout the season by a virus he caught after the Tour Down Under in January. Janko moves to Basel BASEL: Swiss champion Basel say Austria forward Marc Janko has joined on a free transfer from Sydney. Basel say Janko signed a one-year contract with an option for a second season. The deal was announced on Thursday. The move brings Janko closer to home ahead of the 2016 European Championship being played in France. Janko has scored three goals to help unbeaten Austria lead a qualifying group that includes Sweden and Russia. The 1.96-meter player scored a overhead kick in a 1-0 win at Russia this month. Janko disputed Sydney’s statement last month that his international duties in Europe were a factor in him leaving the club after one season in Australia. In July, Basel will enter the Champions League’s third qualifying round.
