4 complaints registered against proposed CJ Shrestha

KATHMANDU: The Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee has received four complaints against Supreme Court senior most justice Kalyan Shrestha, who has been recommended for the post of new Chief Justice (CJ). In one of the complaints, Shrestha has been accused of being unjust while deciding to quash a writ petition on September 1, 2014 when he has also been charged of upholding the promotion committee's decision under alleged influence of the parliament's former and present officials, granting a job to a non-Madhesi citizen in the reservation quota allotted for Madhesis and favouring caste system in the verdicts. Furthermore, Shrestha has been charged of amassing illegal property, spending million of rupees in the wedding of his son, exonerating an accused (Chinese national) in drugs peddling charge by taking bribe while he was the judge of Appellate Court and issuing different verdicts on the cases of same nature, according to Parliament Secretary Joint Secretary Dhruba Ghimire. The complaints were registered at the call of the PHSC, which has scheduled a hearing on the recommendation of Justice Shrestha on coming Sunday. If endorsed by the Committee, Shrestha will be replacing incumbent CJ Ram Kumar Prasad Saha, who is retiring on coming July 8.
