Panel tells government to draft policy to ensure energy security

Kathmandu, October 4 The parliamentary Agriculture and Water Resources Committee directed the government to draft a policy on national energy security. The panel meeting today decided to direct the Energy Ministry to draft a policy in coordination with other bodies of the government including Water and Energy Commission, Nepal Oil Corporation, Nepal Electricity Authority, Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation and Alternative Energy Promotion Centre, besides the private sector. The committee also decided to draw government attention to the need to prioritise sustainable energy security and move ahead developing necessary policy, plan and programmes. The panel has begun discussions on decreasing the country’s dependency on essential materials of agricultural and energy. The meeting decided to make preparations to decrease the country’s dependency on foreign countries for agriculture and energy besides ensuring food and energy security. The committee stated that the blockade has once again raised the vulnerability of the country’s energy sector and taught a lesson on dependence.
