KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala has made it clear that his party would field candidates in the elections for President and Vice-President. According to him, the candidacies were called for to strengthen the democracy and implement the Constitution. 'We are currently holding discussion,' he said, 'We will field right candidates through party decision.' He was talking to media people at an interaction organised by the Reporters Club in his Maharajgunj-based residence. The outgoing Prime Minister, who was defeated by CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli in the prime ministerial elections in the Parliament on October 11, argued that his candidacy in the prime ministerial elections was for democracy and Madhes. He went on to claim that the agitating Madhesi parties returned to the House only because of his candidacy. 'This has paved the way for resolution (of Madhes issues,' he said. According to him, consensus is good thing but competition is the beauty of democracy. Koirala, who served as the Prime Minister for 20 months, said the government should advance the bills on amendment of Constitution in order to resolve the Madhes issues. He urged the stakeholders to end the agitation, saying it would be unfortunate if the country got engulfed in conflict again. We have to accept the historical changes and rectify the shortcomings in them, he stated. Koirala further said that his party would not send representative to the government talks team to hold dialogue with the agitating parties. 'I have told Prime Minister Nepali congress will not take part in the team but will support from outside.'
