NOOSA HEADS: Joe Maloy finished first in the Noosa Triathlon on Sunday, becoming the first American in the 33-year history of the event to win the elite men’s race. The Wildwood Crest, New Jersey native completed the 1.5-kilometer swim, 40-kilometer cycle and 10-kilometer run in 1 hour, 47 minutes, 4 seconds, four seconds ahead of Australians Ryan Fisher and Jake Birtwhistle. Australian Ashleigh Gentle won the women’s race for the third time in four years in a time of 1:59.18. Gentle took command on the bike leg on which Australia’s two-time world champion Emma Moffatt and Czech Radka Vodickova were hit with three-minute time penalties for drafting. Australian Charlotte McShane finished second, Britain’s Emma Pallant third and Moffatt fourth. For the first time, the swim leg took place in the Pacific Ocean instead of the nearby Noosa River canals.
