Legislation Committee delays passage of Reconstruction Bill

KATHMANDU: A meeting of the Legislation Committee under Legislature-Parliament today extended deadline for approval to the the Bill on National Reconstruction from the Committee. Emerging from the meeting, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Agni Prasad Kharel, said that the two-day time has been extended for approving the Bill as per the request of the main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) to hold consultations on the Bill beforehand. CPN-UML lawmaker Rewati Raman Bhandari said that the Bill could not be passed today as the NC requested extension of time for approving the Bill. In the meeting, NC Chief Whip Chinkaji Shrestha requested the Committee to extend time for approving the Bill to hold high-level consultations so as to garner consensus. Ganga Chaudhary Satgauwa, Chairperson of the Committee, said that the deadline has been extended for the NC to hold discussions on the Bill as per the party's request. She also informed that the Committee would next meet on Tuesday, November 24. Delivering his views in the meeting, Ram Narayan Bidari of UCPN-Maoist said that both NC and CPN-UML should expedite works on the Reconstruction Authority by getting the Bill approved as soon as possible to speed up reconstruction of structures ravaged by the April 25 earthquake and several aftershocks.
