House panel seeks details of foreign scholarships

Kathmandu, January 19 The International Relations and Labour Committee of the Legislature Parliament today directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to submit a report with details of scholarships provided by various friendly and neighbouring countries. During a meeting today, the committee directed Foreign Secretary Shankar Das Bairagi to submit the report with details, including the number of foreign scholarships offered to Nepali students and selection criteria within 15 days. The panel sought the details as it is alleged that these scholarships are offered to children of influential politicians and bureaucrats. The committee also directed the MoFA to take initiatives for selection of students through the education ministry in coordination with the finance ministry and the MoFA. During the meeting, Foreign Secretary Bairagi and Education Secretary Bishwo Prakash Pandit apprised the panel of scholarships offered by various countries and the process adopted to select students.
