Dong wins Indian Ambassador’s Golf Cup

Kathmandu, March 5 Tashi Dong won the title of the Indian Ambassador’s Cup Golf Tournament here at Gokarna Golf Club today. Dong played a round of four-under 68 to accumulate 40 points. Dong, the three-handicap amateur golfer also topped the nett section with 43 stableford points. Because of the one-player one-prize rule, Dong chose the main award — gross section trophy. The former national football team member, Dong carded four birdies on the sixth, 10th, 12th and 18th holes in the bogey-free round. Kanchan Basnyat took the nett category trophy with 42 points. The eight-handicap golfer scored Hole-in-One on fifth hole. The organisers had put Tata Indica car for an ace on the 10th hole. Ang Dorjee Sherpa came second in count back after he was tied on 37 points with Col Bikash Shah. Sherpa scored 18 points on back nine, while Shah earned 17. Elizabeth Schapendonk won the women’s section title with 30 points, while Rekha Ghimire came second with 28. Col Shah won the best front-nine score award with 20 points, whereas Kishan Agrawal took the best back-nine score award with 19 points. Other winners of the tournament included Rene Vijay Einhaus (longest drive), Erik Anders Henell (straightest drive), Dr Niranjan Sharma (closest-to-the-pin), Capt Norbu Sherpa (most birdies) and Ssp Rajendra Shrestha (most pars). In all, 71 golfers took part in the tournament organised by Embassy of India in Kathmandu. The event was played under stableford 3/4 handicap format. Indian Ambassador to Nepal Ranjith Rae, Minister for Tourism and Culture Anand Pokhrel, Chief of the Army Staff Gen Rajendra Chhetri, President of Gokarna Golf Club Suhrid Ghimire and Captain Joseph Nathan handed over the prizes to the winners.
